“He has put fire and water before you; you can stretch out your hand for whichever you choose.” (Sirach 15:16). With this, it speaks to us about personal responsibility that is inseparably linked to freedom. If our choice leans toward the absence of good, the human being loses their freedom and becomes enslaved by sin, which in turn hinders their growth in goodness and, above all, in truth.
We should not be bound to work, to money, to fashion, or to the things the world offers us. It is not that we do not need them, but we must not be attached to them; rather, we should use them only to live better. If we are not bound by them, we can turn to God with complete trust and a true belief in Him and His power. The world offers us so many things that it is easy to get caught up and feel tied to them, leading us to believe this is what we must pursue, while neglecting what truly matters.
“Only a person free from attachments can turn to God with confidence”
God certainly makes us free, but often we do not use our freedom correctly; we focus it on other things and not on praising, blessing, or giving thanks to Him - He who is all love. We must allow God to act within us and let His will be done, and in this way, we will be free of all attachments and able to turn to Him with complete trust. We must not forget that the freedom God gives us does not mean we should bind ourselves to what limits our love for Him. Instead, we must use that freedom to thank Him by doing His will.
When we are bound to something - whether a vice, an addiction, or simply indifference when we are slaves to comfort and excess, it becomes very difficult to seek and turn to God. We convince ourselves that it is not important to seek Him, thinking we already have everything we need. Thus, God becomes unimportant; it seems better to go out partying and lose ourselves in pleasure, as these behaviors have become normalized in our society. We are even bound by the opinions of others, doing what they do so as not to be excluded from what society dictates.
But if we take a moment to close our eyes, we will realize that true happiness is what God offers us - and without Him and His love, we are nothing.
